The New Pokemon Snap is slated to release this 30th of April 2021 on the Nintendo Switch.
Announced back in June 2020, the game is the latest version of the much-beloved spin-off that was released back in 1999 on the Nintendo 64. Trainers who enjoy the turn-based combat of the original games may be surprised by the vastly different mechanics here. There are no gym leaders to collect badges from or legendary battles against mythical Pokemons. The game offers us a new way of filling the Pokedex – with photos! Your goal is to fill an album featuring Pokemon in fun and interesting poses and situations.
Much of the gameplay has remained the same. It’s still the first-person rail-shooter simulation game that we know and love. You play as a wildlife photographer whose mission is to take the best pictures of Pokemon in their natural habitats.
The game is set in the Lental region, which seems to have Pokemon from different generations; there was a clip in the trailer with a Grookey and Pichu happily strolling together. So far we’ve seen that there’s a desert, rainforest, tropical island, and an underwater area you can explore.
A lot of the fun in the original spin-off was in finding new and creative ways to get the creatures to pose for you. And from the looks of the trailer, it’s reassuring to see that the heart of the game has remained intact. You can toss food and play music to interact with the creatures. There’s also a new item that can make a Pokemon glow, a phenomenon that you’re tasked to investigate.
At the end of every expedition, your photos will be scored based on whether your subject is looking at you, the creativity of the pose, and how close they are. The new version also lets you edit, add stickers, and share your photos online.
