At Apple WWDC 2020 keynote, we managed to get a first look at the new iOS 14 software update. Though Apple did not reveal anything about iPhone 12, this operating system update is likely to come with it later this year. But fear not, the new iOS 14 beta is actually already available to download. So let’s go through what we know about the new iOS 14, release date, beta, features and which are the supported iPhones.
The new iOS 14 was just unveiled during Apple’s WWDC 2020 keynote. Though, they did not reveal when the new software update will be released, we suspect that it will most likely land in September this year.
You can actually download a developer beta today. But you will need a developer account and a public beta is set to launch in July. If you are interested to test it, mark your calendars! However, testing the public beta on your phone would mean that you’re alright with experiencing potential software problems in the coming months. Public betas are usually temperamental, so it could be better to wait for the real thing in September.
- Home Screen Widgets
Proper widgets are coming our way with iOS 14. They will come in variety of sizes and just look at it, it is really nice. It is so different from what we have seen in previous versions of iOS. The widgets are inspired from the way widgets work on Apple Watch. You can pick different sizes! (Though this is only a rumour) The widgets can now be used on your home screen and Today view on your phone.
- App Library
A brand new feature called the App Library comes with the new iOS 14. The App Library basically helps you to organise your apps without you manually having to do it. For example, your social apps will appear in one folder. This would work automatically and only appear at the end of your home screens. And the apps that you do not want to see can be hidden and found in your App Library.
In addition, the interface of the way you pick up phone calls is changing. Instead of taking the whole screen, it will just be a drop down notification.
- App Clips
App Clips allows you to use an app without having to download lots of files. Apple calls these ‘light and fast’. You can access them through a card that pops up from the bottom of your screen. You can use specific features of certain apps without having to download them from the App Store.
iOS 14 has changed Siri. Yes, Siri is a whole new person now. Siri would now not take up the entire display, but instead appear as a small notification at the top of your phone (just like a regular notification). Not to mention Siri will provide more accurate translations and it can now send audio messages for the first time.
You can now pin conversations on iMessage! Other updates include 20 new hair and headwear styles for Memoji that allows you to customise your character better. Let’s not forget about face coverings. You get inline replies for group conversations and @mentions.
The new Maps updates were outlined during WWDC. We can be expecting Guides, an editorial content about a place. Cyclist are now able to search for quieter roads or cycle lanes and the best feature yet, Maps will be able to tell you if there is a steep incline in your chosen route. However, this cycling feature is only available in selected countries for now, which includes, New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco and some cities in China. The app will also help electric car drivers by telling them where charging stations are when they are on their journey.
Picture-in-picture allows you to keep watching video while using other apps. So if you got a message on your phone, you can reply to it while watching your video. You can do both at the same time!
