It has been 12 years since the first book of Suzanne Collin’s Hunger Games was published. And honestly, it started a global phenomenon and showed us how intriguing teen dystopian fiction can be. Long-time fans and new readers can start celebrating as yesterday (May 19), the prequel of the Hunger Games trilogy was published. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’ (the title of the prequel) cover and title was revealed last fall on Good Morning America.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes takes place during the period of time called the Dark days. It is after the civil war but before the destruction of District 13. (We can imagine that people who has neither read the book or watched the movies will be really lost here. So you can skip to the next paragraph where we will be talking about the possible movie?) Let us continue with the synopsis. The story centres around President Coriolanus Snow’s teenage years, before he became the president of Panem. The prequel highlights a completely different light on Snow. It offers readers a better understanding on his character’s development. You can listen to an exclusive excerpt here.
About that possible movie adaption, Lionsgate (the studio that produced all four Hunger Games movies) has actually already confirmed that an adaption of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is in the works. There’s no information on the casting yet. However, we do know that Francis Lawrence (the director of the last three movies) would be directing the movie. In addition, Collin’s herself would be the executive producer on the film!
