Top 5 romantic Korean dramas to binge watch on Netflix

We are just wondering if there is anyone out there who hasn’t dipped their toes into the world of romantic Korean dramas. For those of you who haven’t, we are here to help you out. Here are our top 5 romance themed Korean dramas you should binge watch on Netflix (in no particular order). Yes, on Netflix because who wants to constantly click on the ‘next episode’ button.

What’s wrong with Secretary Kim

What’s wrong with Secretary Kim is a light-hearted romantic-comedy Korean drama. It is a simple fairy-tale romance: Wealthy handsome boss falling in love with his beautiful secretary. The attractiveness of this series obviously did not come from the cliché love line but it comes from the courtship process between the leads. With every ridiculous action that the lead actor (Park Seo-Joon) does, to try to keep the actress (Park Min-Young) by his side, you just can’t seem to stop yourself from falling in love with him.

This drama will make your heart flutter with a kind of sweetness that makes you feel good. The light-heartedness and romantic themes in this series are easy to digest and it just worms its way into your heart. With just 16 episodes, we bet that you will be able to finish it in 1 to 2 days. The series does not feel draggy and it is long enough to not leave any plot holes in the storyline.

The Legend of the Blue Sea

The Legend of the Blue Sea is a 2016 Korean fantasy/ romance series. Long story short, it is a love story between a mermaid and a con artist. Before you roll your eyes and dismiss this series, The Legend of the Blue Sea has a really good storyline. Let’s not forget about the amazing cast: Lee Min-Ho (the current talk of the town because of his latest Netflix series The King: Eternal Monarch). Jun Ji-Hyun (She also stars in another popular series My love from another star).

This Korean drama has a good combination of humour and romance that would leave you wanting more. It keeps you on the edge of your seat, literally. The next thing you know, you will start talking/ screaming to your computer screen or tv, “Love her! Love her! What is wrong with you?!”. With every episode, you will experience different emotions along with the characters. You know it is good when you start hating on a particular character or when you start falling in love with the lead actor/ actress.

While you were sleeping

While you were sleeping is one of our personal favourites. Why? Because it doesn’t just focus on romance. It includes darker themes like death and crime (Not your typical fairy-tale story). Let us tell you the plot: Nam Hong-Joo (played by Bae Suzy) has dreams that serve as warnings about future unfortunate events. However, she is unable to change the outcome when it happens in real life. That is until she met Jung Jae-Chan (played by Lee Jong-Suk). For some unexplainable reason, he is able to help change what Hong-Joo sees in her dreams. Sounds interesting, doesn’t it. Once we started on this series, we just couldn’t stop.

This is a great drama for people who wants to have a taste of romantic Korean dramas but does not want to drown in a sea of romantic clichés. And here, we have another set of amazing casts and characters. We are not just talking about the leads but the supporting characters as well.

Crash landing on you

Crash Landing on You has got to be one of the biggest romance Korean drama in 2019. We believe that this series will be in every “best Korean dramas to watch on Netflix” list. And honestly, we can’t blame them. Crash landing on you tells the story of two star crossed lovers: Yoon Se-ri (played by Son Ye-jin), a South Korean Chaebol (a large family-owned business conglomerate) heiress. Ri Jeong-hyeok (played by Hyun-bin), a member of North Korean elite and a captain in the Special Police Force.

Crash Landing on You carries an unrealistic element that takes the romance to a whole new level. At the same time, adds suspense to the story as it is more far-fetched and heart wrenching. If we add in an amazing cast, you know this is a sure winner. One moment you will find Ri Jeong-hyeok saying sweet nothings to a plant and the next thing you know, he is shooting enemies. It is a roller-coaster ride that leaves you in tears of laughter and sadness.

Her Private Life

Her Private Life is a 2019 romantic comedy Korean drama starring Park Min-young, Kim Jae-wook and Ahn Hye-young. This series is every K-pop fan’s dream. On the surface, Her Private Life follows the formula of  the female lead (Deok-mi) falls in love with her handsome boss (Ryan Gold) and finds out that they have a secret childhood relationship as they fall for each other. If we put this cliché storyline aside, what makes Her Private Life ever so entertaining is that Deok-mi is a fangirl obsessed with a k-pop idol.

This twist in the story makes it every K-pop fan’s dream. Ryan Gold is sensitive, vulnerable and not afraid to cry. But his main selling point is he respects Doek-mi’s passions (a nicer term for obsession) and does not stop her from being a fangirl, he even encourages it. He even asks her to teach him how to be a fan! Another thing we love about this drama is that Her Private Life has a very open pro-LGBTQ stance which is not common in Korean dramas. In short, Her Private Life is every K-pop lovers’ dream and every guy’s nightmare.

We have to admit that romantic Korean dramas have their pitfalls like cliché and tacky storylines but they have definitely mastered the art of making their audience fall in love with the characters.

So, here are our top 5 romantic Korean drama you should binge watch on Netflix. Alternatively, if you are a Korean drama lover here is a list of Korean dramas and films coming to Netflix in April 2020.
