Hidden in private apartment shops near Hougang Central, lies a hidden gem from Thailand. Tiew Mai Thai Boat Noodle is located at 1187 Upper Serangoon Rd, #01-22 The MidTown, Singapore 533971. They specialise in Thai Boat Noodles (obviously).
Boat Noodles originated from the River Canals in Bangkok, served by vendors on boats who traverse along the canals. Since then, the popularity of boat noodles in Thailand has gotten bigger and is now sold commonly across the country. They even made their way onto the shores of Singapore.
Tiew Mai offers the usual boat noodles with Beef or Pork and are usually served either in soup or dry. On top of that, they sell Tom Yum noodles. An unusual offering compared to the traditional dishes. Like most noodle stores in Singapore, you can choose the noodles to go with it, with a wide range from glass noodles and kway teow to vermicelli and egg noodles. We tried the usual offering of Dry Pork Noodles & the unusual Tom Yum Noodles.
The Pork Noodles comes with pork slices, liver & meatballs. The noodles are mixed with a thin layer of black sauce. It’s savoury and the noodle has a nice chewy texture. The sauces are not spicy, so you will have to add in Thai chilli flakes to give it some spiciness.
Next, the Tom Yum Noodles. It is an interesting dish. This is seafood Tom Yum, with Prawns and Squid in it. The flavour is not as strong as the Tom Yum you’d expect from the usual Thai Restaurants. It is because you will be drinking the soup with the noodlse and if its too strong & spicy, you will be choking on it most of the time.
Tiew Mai also offers sides that you can have with your noodles, prices range from $1 – $4 which are very affordable to go along with your main. We recommend that you order the Chicken Roll or the Golden Tofu. They both go great with the noodles that you are having.
Overall, we think Tiew Mai Thai Boat Noodle is a hidden gem and it gets a BRUTAL APPROVED from us.
